Mazda put the Axe in the RX8 and have discontinued the “sports car” that was never a sports car. I personally liked the RX8′s styling and thought the car handled like a dream. I think the problem was that it never really had an engine that……matched the look.
I mean if you expect me to pay between 27 and 30 thousand for a car that looks like it could move, well it better move. I don’t think the poor sales had anything to do with the car being a rotary, just an under-powered rotary.
A quick search of sports cars in the high 20′s to mid 30′s brings up some tough competition. On the import side you have cars like the Mazdaspeed 3, Genesis Coupe, Evo, STI and the 370Z. If you dare go over to the American cars you can pick up a Mustang or a Camaro.
There are conflicting rumors about the fate of the Rotary and if this is it’s death also. Some say Mazda is not giving up on the Rotary and others say this is it. I hope they keep the Rotary around and bring back a new Rx-7.
