If you are a car guy you have either heard it or said it depending on the car you drive. “Yeah your car is faster than mine, until you have to turn.” It was always an annoyance for those of us who set their cars up for more track or auto X than drag.
Unfortunately the 1/4 mile track is really the only affordable method for “testing” two cars side by side. Its affordable if you have a track near by, its still $10 to run any car at Orlando Speedworld and there is something about the rush of seeing the other car and trying to beat it.
You can auto-x your car, but its you against the clock. It’s not the same as having a car right there as you try to squeeze that last ounce of power out of your ride for the win.
Now those interested in more than a straight line have an affordable and safe outlet. Enter SCCA pro solo. It is basically an auto-x with to side by side identical tracks and a CMAS Tree start. First to cross the finish line wins.
It’s quite affordable compared to most forms of road racing. All need is to be an S.C.C.A. member ($85 a year), own a current Solo rulebook ($25), have a helmet and pay $95 for the weekend of racing. That’s under $300 bucks for your first time out and then its only the $95 a weekend for the rest of the year.
One of the biggest bonus is don’t have to worry about running into other cars or walls like you do when racing with other cars on a full on track. The tracks are mirrored so that if someone spins out they are nowhere near the other car.
There are classes so you are running against similar cars in the first rounds. The races are run like bracket racing in drags. In the final rounds you get a time calculated on your runs you cant go faster than that. This makes it so you can race against a faster car and still win.
Unfortunately SCCA does not run these races a lot, only about 8 a year, so there may not be any near you.
I think this would be a great thing for a track or Auto-x to setup and run as a standalone event, like drag nights. It seems like one step further than the Barrel Racing they do out at the Central Florida Road Course.
