Nissan 370Z Bumper Fang Air Vents

370Z Front Bumper Fang Vents

Previously the Jade Motorsports Nissan 370Z was fitted with an outstanding MXP exhaust system. On the dyno, it appeared that there was something restricting the true power of the vehicle. It is long over due, but we finally found the time to work on the intake system.

It was decided that the Jade Motorsports Fairlady Z34 was going to be outfitted with a short ram air intake system. The problem with a setup such as this, is that there is a lack of cool air drawn to the intakes in comparison to a long tube cold air intake. Thanks to a DIY on the370z.com we were able to modify the factory front bumper of the Nissan 370Z so that we could utilize the “fangs” as air ducts.

This is a relatively easy modification, and all you need is a 10mm ratchet and a flat head screwdriver. The front bumper has to be removed from the car. There are seven pop tabs on the top center of the bumper, a screw in each fender well, and ten bolts underneath the bumper. The parts were sourced from the local auto store, and cost roughly around $65. You would need two hoses, four air duct mounts, and four hose clamps.

On the inside of the bumper you will find a plate that blocks off the fang, remove the two screws that hold it in, and cut off the tab on the bumper. Cutting the tab makes the opening flat and allows the air duct mount to lay flat. For all of the mounts, we were able to use the factory screws and holes to attach the air duct mounts to the bumper, and to the car.

From this point, all that is needed is to run the hose and attach them with the hose clamps to the mounts on the car. Prepare the hose end that will attach to the front bumper. This will be connected with hose clamps when reinstalling the front bumper.

All that is left is to reinstall the front bumper. It is difficult to see in this next picture, but the end results are functional “fangs” that draw ram air into the intake system. In a little detail, we painted the air duct mounts black before installing.

This modification will benefit an aftermarket short ram intake, including the factory intake system. I did not take any temperature measurements, but other owners who have did notice an improvement in air intake temps. Up next, installation of the custom short ram air intake system.
