This has got to be my favorite type of car at the auction just beating out the muscle cars. This was what really started the whole custom car craze. A bunch of kids who couldn’t afford the top of the line cars so they took their run of the mill rides and threw in bigger motors, larger tires, cut the tops off them and did just about anything to make them unique. Street rods are basically a hot rod built with newer engines and suspensions.

I think I have a soft spot for these cars since my high school art teacher was a pretty well know illustrator of hot rods and had a few that he showed off to us. Lance Sorchik is best known for his contributions to Rodders Digest Magazine where he contributed for 20 years, creating a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ commentary/illustration about contemporary hot rodding. This was one of my main car and art influences and below is one of his cartoons.

Unfortunately there were not a lot of rods there on Sunday but the ones that were there were very nice. My favorite had to be this 1932 Ford Highboy. Yes it is a fiberglass replica body but was done so well.
The highboy narrowly beat out this 1937 Ford Slantback as my favorite of this group.
