Love the Beast: A movie every real car guy should see…

The other day a friend of mine posted a link to a movie on Netflix I had never heard of, Love the Beast by Eric Bana. The movie chronicles Eric Bana’s love affair with his Ford GT Falcon Coupe that he has owned since childhood. Eric and his childhood friends have spent hundreds of hours in his parents garage building and rebuilding the car and it reminded me so much of when we built the Scion XA for Sema.

The movie has interviews with my favorite automotive personality, Jeremy Clarkson and the uber car nut Jay Leno. The whole arc of the movie is that Eric purchased his Ford GT Falcon Coupe when he was a child living in Australia. He and his childhood buddies tinkered, tuned and modded the car all throughout their childhoods and now they are building it up as a full on race car to enter it in The Targa Tasmania Rally.

One of the main themes of the movie is that non car people just don’t understand what it means to have a love affair with a car. They don’t get that you can develop a relationship with the car, like its a living breathing entity not just a bunch of steel and parts. The best quote that really makes the point comes from Jeremy Clarkson. He basically says you wouldn’t tell you wife “Well, its been a great run but now that your older and not working as well I’m going to trade you in for something that works better and is much younger”.

The movie is a great watch and if you are like me and have fond memories of building cars with your friends it really stirs up some emotions. Thanks to Al Powers for the heads up about the movie.

My dream job still is and will always be building cars.
