For this trip we fired up the old Jadecrew time machine and ended up at Irwindale Speedway on August 31st 2003. This was the first time D1 had come to the USA and was doing an exhibition to introduce drifting to the United States. Even though this event did not count for the actual series all the big Japanese drivers came out for the exhibition. With this event happening on our continent for the first time Jade just had to be there. So we got up a crew, flew out and were there to see history.
It’s hard to believe that this was nearly a decade ago but it was. We had such a good time on this trip that it makes me miss the times the whole crew got together and took trips. We rented a 15 passenger van and tore that thing up. It really is the rental car companies fault because they offered us this insurance for $15 a day and said that no matter what happens to the van we would not be held responsible.
We allegedly stickered the entire van up with all the free stickers we could find, ran into a stop sign, played bumper cars with the other rental car and then returned the van. As we drove up the kid who took the keys asked us “did you go to the races?” we said “yes”. He then asked “did you win?”.
