2003 Infiniti M45 Suspension Guide: Part 2: Coilovers

Coilovers for the 2003 Infinit M45

My problem with springs is that they always seem to be just a little off as far as the perfect drop. Once they are in that is it, they are not adjustable. One of the other problems is that if you switch springs eventually your struts will go bad and that can get expensive.

Coilover’s solve these problems giving you a fully adjustable suspension with built in upgraded struts. Once installed you can set the height of each individual corner so that you can get the perfect drop all around. Some coilovers also allow you to adjust the dampening on the struts so you can fine tune the ride stiffness. This allows you to be able to adjust your suspension to the optimal setting for multiple driving situations. If you were so inclined you could go out and have your car corner balanced.

Part One: Springs | Part 2 Coilovers

Imagine a car as a four legged chair. In order for the chair to stand steadily, all four legs should be of equal length and as a consequence applying equal pressure on the floor. If one leg is longer, or shorter than the others, we have a chair that rocks, and is unstable.

Coilovers for the 2003 Infiniti M45:

After an exhaustive search of the net I have only found US M45 that is claiming to be using any type of coilover suspension. If you know of any others please let me know I would like to add it to the article. For now I will post the info on the most common coilovers that can be sourced for the car and will “supposedly fit”.

D2 Racing Coilovers: Do they exist?

In my search for the perfect drop on my 2003 Infiniti M45 I once again came up blank on finding coilovers that were made for the US car. Everything you find is for the 06 and up model. Then one day I came across a listing on ebay for a set of coilovers claiming to be for the 03/04 M45 models. My problem with it is that the title is “D2 RACING COILOVERS 03-05 INFINITI M35 M45 SUSPENSION”.

The M35 and M45 are two totally different chassis and there is no way one suspension could fit both. I emailed them to see if it was indeed for the 03 M45 and they say it is. I still have not seen anyone with a Y34 who has them or even a picture of it installed from D2. So this one is a maybe as of right now.

UPDATE:
According to a friend of mine on a forum they contacted the ebay seller and they told them they “no longer make them for the 03-04″. If you ask me they never made them.

JDM Options:

There are a few different options for coilovers from Japan, the most common are the JIC Magic and the Insurance. There is some debate as to if the spring rates are acceptable for the US spec cars as there was with springs meant for JDM cars. Since the Y34 in japan had a turbo V6 it weighed in at about 50lbs lighter than the M. In my experience with the springs this made no difference in how the car felt or handled so I would say it would not matter on coilovers either.

Below is a list of know specs and info on the coilovers that “should” fit the 2003 Infiniti M45’s.
