200 MPH: The worst “import movie” ever….

I was looking for something to watch on netflix and came across “200 MPH”. I was worried from the get go.

This is the synopsis on netflix “When the older brother… (Tommy Nash) he idolizes is run off the road by a ruthless drug dealer (Darren Thomas) during a nighttime street race known as Sepulveda Suicide, Rick Merchant (Jaz Martin) channels his grief into getting revenge behind the wheel. But to win, he’ll need to modify his trusty 1978 Datsun 280Z — with help from a pretty mechanic (Hennely Jimenez) — to get the maximum speed out of its machinery”.

The cover however had a car that is for sure not a 280Z. My concerns were immediately validated when up rolls a Nissan 370Z and the main character says “that’s like an 80,000 car, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds, quarter mile in 11.5 seconds and 193 miles per hour top speed right out of the box”.

Those of us with a clue about a 370Z know that none of that is correct, or even close. Despite this I decided to forge on, hell the original “The Fast and the Furious” had some incorrect car stuff but was enjoyable. This however just got worse, much worse.

I think someone watched “The Fast and the Furious” as “research” and then made this movie. In addition to absolute batshit specs and car info they had no clue what continuity is. On the way to the big race the 370Z mysteriously transforms into a R35 skyline and them back to a 370Z.

The following two screens are one after the other.

The editing on the races is comical at best. Somehow the cars swap between lead and follow all the time, without any passing. A little later in the movie, as the hero is building his MX-5 (which is actually a old school rx7) for the big race it transforms into a 240SX and then transforms back during a test drive.

Inevitably we end up at the “NOS Scene” and learn how it won’t work on the MX-5 and the car will actually fly if they try it. This is the only time they actually call the car an RX-7.

After fitting the NOS to the MX-5/RX7/240SX they take the car out for a test drive. It once again flip flops between an RX7 and a 240. Also on the test drive he hits the nitrous in the best place, a corner. Really, did anyone even ask someone who knew about cars a question?

I could go on for hours with the utter stupidity going on in this movie but it actually hurts to continue. Look at the sketches that the mechanic did for the master plan for the hero’s ride. When he saw them all he said was “this is going to work”. Everything I have pointed our so far happens before the movie is even half over.

It’s a low budget direct to video flick so I can forgive the horrible acting but 5 minutes with a real enthusiast and they could have had a descent movie on their hands. Instead it was impossible to watch without laughing at all the mistakes and blatant disrespect for the scene.

They even put the car swap in the damn trailer.
